Philipp battles into Kuala Lumpur 2nd round, books QF spot in doubles


Philipp upset world no.117 James Ward on Tuesday, recording a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (5) victory in the first round of the Malaysian Open. The match lasted two hours and 6 minutes. It was their first career meeting.


After splitting the first two sets, Philipp found himself down a break in the deciding third set. However, he managed to fight back and force a tie-breaker, which he won 7-5 to advance.


Stats: aces (4-7), double faults (4-2), total points won (95-92).


Philipp will take on no.2 seed Ernests Gulbis of Latvia in R2. The 30-year-old German won their only previous match.


In the doubles action, Philipp and his partner Jurgen Melzer ousted Pablo Cuevas (ARG) and Santiago Gonzalez (MEX) 6-2, 7-5 to reach the ATP World Tour 250 event quarter-finals.


They will next play against either no.4 seeds, the Polish/Indian duo of Marcin Matkowski and Leander Paes, or Australian combination of Marinko Matosevic and Bernard Tomic.
