Wimbledon: Philipp Wins Opener


Philipp needed one hour and 44 minutes to beat Blaz Kavcic of Slovenia 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 at Wimbledon on Monday. He converted four of his eight break point opportunities during the match and saved three break points. Philipp hit 14 aces and 51 winners.

With this win, Philipp improved to 8-4 at the all England Club and to a 7-11 match record on the season. His best result at The Championships is third round exits in 2009 (lost to Lleyton Hewitt) and 2010 (lost to Rafael Nadal).

He will next play fellow German and No. 31 seed Florian Mayer. They have played each other three times and Mayer leads the series 3-0.
